1997 Ford Taurus transmission will not shift into 3rd gear

The transmission will not shift into 3rd gear or the overdrive gear. It just started and I am affraid to drive it far.

Find a locally-owned trans shop, no national chains, have them diagnose. Some will run rudimentary tests, pressure, hydraulic, for free. Oh yeah make sure they scan for codes, some will not turn on the check engine light.
