The engine seems to run fine but the trans. Won't shift out of first gear. I was told it was in "limp in mode". I can't afford to take it to a shop and am hoping it's an electrical problem and not a complete trans replacement. There is no check engine light. I don't have access to an OBDII reader.

This is most likely an electrical problem. The computer controls shifting by information received from the two speed sensors. If either one of them fails, the computer cannot tell when to shift the transmisison.

Does the speedometer work? If not it is the output speed sensor. If it does, then it is the input speed sensor.
