Last week when it was really cold out my Taurus started making an engine noise when I started it. The noise was a grinding noise and it sounded like it was one of the pulleys. The noise subsides (or seems to) when I drive, but starts again when idling. I looked under the hood and there is oil spattered everywhere where there was none before. A lot of oil is on base of the top pulley on the serpentine belt. I fear it may be a catastrophic problem. What can you tell me?

Thanks for the answer. Yes is it a 24V. Any idea what it would cost to have it replaced?

Pump runs @$150 and labor 2 hrs. So if shop rate $90 per hr. Then $180. Depending on what happened to pump they may also want to flush system to remove any metal.
