Car temp Gauge showing High temp even when engine is cold and/or just started. Heater was working intermittently but when Temp gauge went to max lost heat in the car altogether(Safety Feature?). When the temp gauge read normally, heat worked fine. Heat Gauge now always reads maximum after only a few minutes of operation. ECT has been shorted to ground. No change in gauge fan does come on. What could the problem be?

Sounds like there isnt any fluid in the engine. Check coolant level and replace the thermostat. You cant get any hot air without coolant in the heater core. Look for leaks, need to find out where it is going

I agree with 2CARPRO JACK, it sounds like you have a coolant leak which will cause both of these issues, I would use this guide to help find the leak.

Also, please go over this video it can help as well
