1987 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My dad has a ford ranger that runs but not good. He says it floods and starts smoking when driven a mile or two. He's had it a shop for about 6 months now and the machanic says he's stumped.

The smoke he said was black and it's coming out the exaust pipe in the back from what I understood. Someone though it was the carborator but he doesn't think so. I don't know.
