I'm quite sure that I have a cracked or blown head gasket. I am losing radiator coolant though there are no leaks visible. There is some gunk on the cap where you would add oil to the engine and steam comes out of that pipe when the car is running. The coolant in the radiator also has a brownish hue. I was wondering what the costs would be, roughly, to have this problem fixed by a trained mechanic. Also I was curious how long a car in this state might be able to be run with this problem. I did not pay much for the car and it does run fine right now. Thank you for your time.

Well if it is indeed a blown headgasket it will probably cost about 700 bucks, but then again since you have not listed the type of vehicle it may be a little more, maybe a little less.

If the head is cracked, expect to buy a new one.
