O/D Off light flashes

2002 Ford Mustang 122000 miles 3.6 litre V6 engine. The O/D Off light will start flashing when driving down the highway. It doesn't do it when just driving around town. What could be causing this? It has also started down shifting hard and when it is cold out and you warm it up, when you put it into gear, it jerks and dies. I have to go out and get into a cold car in order to go anywhere when it's cold.

Take it to a locally-owned reliable trans shop and have them run diagnostics, the flashing od light is signaling some type of issue with the trans operation. Some shops will run free diagnostics or for small fee, find a locally-owned shop with good rep, your best bet. Does it stall when you put it in gear or come to a stop? Maybe your torque converter is staying locked up, good luck

It does not stall when I come to a stop. It does down shift hard and the engine will bog down but not stall. When the stop is complete and just sitting at the red light, the engine idles fine. If it is cold outside and I have had the car "warming up" and I put it in gear, then it stalls. Thanks for the advice!
