I have a 2002 Ford Mustang convertible with 65,000 miles, 3.8L V6 and automatic transmission. The car starts okay but I cannot shift out of Park. It doesn't matter which position the ignition is in or if I depress the brake or have the emergency brake on.

I tried the procedure in the manual and verified the brake lights function. I also checked the fuse for the shift lock actuator. Everything looks good. The only thing I noticed was with the release button on the side of the gear shift knob. It goes in and springs out but it doesn't feel like it engages anything.

Hey check that release button real good make sure that it is not the fualt. If its fine than get someone else or a bunch of people to push the rear of the car foward and then you or someone else try to take it out of park.

Alot of times cars and tractors and all sorts of stuf with gears will malfunction and the gearing will get stuck in the middle of all the gears say a 5 speed auto or manuel trans had this happen, Now with it stuck in the middle of the gearing its in 10 gears now and it will not move.

Hope this helps
