I recently purchased a 97 Mustang coupe. The check engine light is staying on. What could this mean and how can it be taken care of?

First thing I need you to do is go to a auto part's store like auto zone and have them scan the car for code's and let me know what the code number's are. Other wise no telling what's going on with that light.
