I just took my 2002 F-150 to the shop because I stupidly ran it low on oil it started making a knocking or puttering noise from the engine. I didn't drive on it much once I heard this I wanted to get it checked out asap before causing further damage. The mechanic at the shop advised me that the cam has messed up the header (1 of the 2 I guess) he adv that he could replace the header to stop the noise but he couldn't gaurantee that it would entirely fix the problem because it might have or would mess up the other header as well. He adv me that he thought it would be best if I got a NEW ENGINE! This is rediculous I understand that running the oil low is dangerous but do I really have to buy a new engine? Is there anything that u can suggest that might fix the problem or am I stuck like chuck? I appreciate the assistance.

Hi well how does the truck sound when you put oil back into it. Still knocking or normal?/ I think what he is saying is one head has just as much damage and miles as the second in order for him to repair prob and warranty the work he would not be comfortable just replaceing one head. And then the next thought he is thinking is the noise you hear on the top that is cam noise. Is not the only damage to your eng he is suspecting lower eng damage as well. And of course you have to look at the fact that it ran out of oil because something happened to the oil what? So new eng will solve all your probs and can be warrant. So what you have to deceide is do you want to spend the money or just keep oil in it and drive it the way it is. May run for a very long time the way it is with oil. Good luck billymac
