Transmission problem
1997 Ford F150 V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My van lags/struggles when it enters 2nd gear. It doesn't stall or anything like that it just lags and you can hear the stress on the engine. It only behaves like this in 2nd gear and runs perfectly fine in all other gears. I have taken it to several mechanics and none of them have so far found the problem. I really need some help with this ASAP but I don't have a credit card to pay for the immediate response.

Does it seem like there is an extra load on the engine (maybe shifting too soon) or does it seem like the trans is slipping? Also, is the trans fluid clean and full?

Yeah it sounds like there's an extra load on the engine and I would say a slight early shift. The transmission fluid was changed recently because it boiled over once and came through the trans-breather.

Yeah the 'check engine' light came on a few times. I got it checked once and it disappeared. Now it only comes up every now and again.

Well I brought it to a mechanic and he must have checked the codes, but he told me that I needed some new coils [I can't remember what kind of coils]. So I bought those and they were replaced. After that the check engine light hardly ever came on. Now its giving me this problem in 2nd gear.

That sounds like ignition coils. You most likely had a misfire. I hate to say it, but I need you to have the computer for the transmission scanned to see if any damage was done to a sensor, module. Because of the overheat, it is really hard to say what may have happened. The clutch pack may have even been damaged.
