Engine Performance problem
1991 Ford F150 110000 miles

Engine knocks and I've been told it is going to die soon and to use 20/50 oil to help until it dies(something about bearings. When it ran too long on too low oil). Now it has a smelly smoke coming through the AC vent. The sound has not gotten any worse Is this the final stages of death or is the smoking vent unrelated to engine and something that is fixable?

Although I dont agree with runing it with thicker oil to cover it up. Id just replace and rebulid the engine now unstead of having it go out and spend 2X as much to fix it.

But anyways. What does the smell and what color smoke coming from the vent?

Smells like burning plastic or rubber. Smoke is white/gray.

Not sure I want to spend the money on a new engine on a truck that old. I bought it cheap for my 16 yo son to learn in and live through his first wreck. How much (cheapest) do you think I could put a used engine in it?

Thanks so much for your help. I don't know much about cars and don't really have any knowledgable mechanic friends. Have to take it to a shop and pay for advice.

Check craigslist or a junk yard get one for 200 bucks to have someone put in or yourself. Not too hard of a job just takes time.

Sounds like a bad headgasket possible burning oil.
