Ford Explorer, 4.0L engine, transmission question

Ford Explorer, 4.0L engine 1996, 135k automatic. When I back out of my drive and shift from reverse to drive, the transmission does not engage. I have to switch it back to N and then back to drive to get it to engage. You guys think that I need a transmission rebuild or maybe just flush out tranny fluid?

I have the same issue.1999 Toyota 4Runner V6 Automatic with 138,000miles. I have had first mechanic say to rebuild the transmission, second says to just flush it and third says that it isn't the transmission at all that the problem is with the rear wheel bearings, inner and outer seals and axle seals leaking. HELP!
