Hello. I own a 2002 Ford Explorer. My A/C does not cool well unless Im driving at a constant speed on the highway with the RPM's around 2000-2300. When I come to a stop the A/C efficiency reduced and when I start to accelerate the A/C lines seems to whine/howl. The whine changes with different RPMs. The whine also affects the cooling performance. I had my Freon level checked twice. The dealer told me they dont know what it is. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

AIR CONDITIONING PROBLEM: NOISE

Noise from the compressor usually means the compressor is on its way out. But noise can also be caused by cross-contaminated refrigerant (operating pressure too high), air in the system or the wrong type of compressor lubricant.

I had the system recovered and then recharged. I was thinking it might be the compressor clutch or the expansion valve. Could either of those cause the whine noise while the a/c is running?

When replacing the a/c compressor what other parts should I replace?

Thanks

Could be the clutch, you sure the belt is not slipping-Just replace the compressor itself. Have you tried listening to it real close to ID where the whine is coming from.
