Theres special tools used to unload teh balljoints for wear checking with specific ones for each vehicle, that gets expensive. You can use a 2X4 and a jack to unload the ball joints on most vehicle.

To remove the ball joints you will need a ball joint kit, comes with the tool for poping them out and pressing in the new ones.
