I have a 1997 Ford Exployer that has a rough idle until the temp comes up to normal during a cold start. The engine will die several times during start up. Once the engine has reached normal operating temp, it runs great. I have replaced the idle and map sensors has well as a general tune up( plugs and wires). I have also looked for vacumn lines for possible leaks but did not detect any.

Are there any trouble codes? Honestly, to me it sounds like a problem with the temp sensor. It determines the outsude temp and tells the computer how righ to make the air fuel mixture. Have you checked that?

Yes, P0171 and P0174. If it is extremely cold out and I let the vehicle idle for a while, I might get the misfire codes of P0301 - P0306. I have not checked the temp sensor, but will do so next.

UPPER AND LOWER INTAKE GASKETS $30.00 WORTH OF PARTS. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS FIXED IT LAST WEEK, CAME ON SOME SITES TO OFFER SOME HELP FOR OTHER FRUSTRATED PEOPLE. WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD EVERYTHING IS CONTRACTED AND ALLOWS THE INTAKE TO SUCK AIR, WHEN IT WARMS UP EVERYTHING EXPANDS AND MAKES THE GASKETS SEAL. THE INTAKE IS NOTHING BUT PLASTIC AND THE GASKETS ARE O RINGS, THE GASKETS WERE DRY AND SOME WERE EVEN BROKEN. MAKE SURE YOU REPLACE UPPER AND LOER GASKETS. MY LIFE IS MUCH NICER NOW. HOPE THIS HELPS
