When I turn the ignition the engine won`t crank it just clicks and will not start up, even after I have replaced the battery

My 96 explorer had a problem with the key cylinder in the ignition. Peices broke inside of it and the key wasn't getting into place. Tried every other thing to try to get it to crank, and it was this. Not cheap! Like 400 bucks.

The clicking. I've had that happen before too. But in another vehicle. Alternator maybe?
