I am having a hard time getting my lower ball joint out of my 4wd explorer. If I take the steering bar apart, will that allow me to move the axle to the side so I can press the balljoint out and in?

If you haven't solved the problem yet, There's a website with step by step photos for the job. You need to buy or borrow a 32mm socket to first loosen then remove the hub nut. Remove the wheel, caliper, caliper bracket. Support the lower control arm with a jack, remove the nut from the top control arm ball joint, remove the castle nut from the lower ball joint, get a pickle fork to separate the lower ball joint from the hub assembly and remove the hub assembly. Tie the caliper and axle up out of the way and rent a ball joint press kit to remove and then replace the ball joint. Autozone loans the press and pickle fork for free. Took me less than 4 hours to do both sides including back and forth to the store. No loss of blood or knuckle damage either
