Transmission problem
1992 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Recently, there has been a few fluid leaks on this vehicle. It has a lot of miles, how many I am not sure. However, the transmission leaks started a few weeks ago, and have progressively gotten worse. On Friday, the transmission finally just let all the fluid release from the housing. My question is, what could have busted for this to happen? Will I have to replace the Main seal or the whole transmission?

If it is coming from the front (bellhousing) where it meets the engine, then it could be the front seal. Thing is, sometimes the seals fail, but it can also be a problem with the front pump in the trans.A trans shop could take the pump out and inspect it while the trans is out.

Ok, thanks, I kind of figured it was the seal. I am gonna pull the tranny myself and take a look, and Ill have a shop inspect it. The vehicle doesnt belong to me, but to my girlfriend, and she hasnt kept the vehicle in very good condition. I believe she mightve been using the wrong fluids and overfilling it.
