When does a catalytic converter need changing?

Hi.
escort cabriolet 1.8 zetec. 1996. Mileage = 92,000 miles.
How is is it possible to know when a catalytic converter needs changing, and what, if any, faults occur if the catalytic converter is faulty?

I wouldn't replace it unless it goes bad. If it's no broke, don't fix it. Some symptomes of a bad cat. Include decreased fuel mileage, sputtering, and the engine sometimes may die after a few minutes and act like it is starving for fuel. You may hear rattling in the exhause which means that the actual catylist has broken apart from the casiing.
