Problem with Catalytic Converter

Drove about 300 miles on a ford escort wagon SE ('95) with 119k miles on it. Religiously changed oil and just changed fuel filter.

however, car started feeling a little bit sluggish and made a broken muffler sound whenever I step on the gas to accelerate. Also, a weird clanking sound when I try to accellerate. Doesn't happen when the car is idling, although there have been some shakes/vibrations when I'm stopped at a light.

from NYC so I'm not used to having a car. Is the the catalytic converter? Or could it just be the muffler? What about the clanking?

Get it up on a lift so someone can inspect the system. Any check engine light?

Nope. No engine lights or anything re: engine warnings. Just the sounds like a clanging and the broken muffler sound, but it's coming from underneath the driver's seat.

Possibly the heat shield on the cat is loose? It'll rattle pretty good.
