Oil leak

I have a 1998 ford escort SE 118,000 miles, automatic transmisson SOHC 2.0L, leaking oil. My question is. If I use Bardol stop leak additive in the engine will it harm the engine? The owners manaul says not to use additives in the oil it could harm the engine.

Hi there,

These stop leaks only work for a short time, they swell the seals to stem the oil, but it wont target the leaking seal only, it will affect all seals, and there is a possibility that the seal will fail and leak even more, along with any other seal that has been affected, There is only one way to repair an oil leak and it is to replace faulty seal or gasket. Do it once do it right and you will not have a problem.
