Oil leak

I have a 1998 ford escort SE 4 door SOHC 2.0 liter with 118,000 miles that is leaking oil. My question is will it harm the engine if I put some Bardal oil leak stop additive in the oil. The owners manual says not to put additives in the oil that it could possibly harm the engine.

It is better to find the leak, then if it can be easily fixed, fix it, Like could be a valve cover gasket, or cracked oil sender. Go to the car wash and degrease it, then look for the fresh oil trail!
