Had a similar problem with an old taurus. Went to the dealer and they installed a new TPS (Throttle Position Sensor?) Valve. Seemed to help very well! No idea how to install somthing like that myself.

What year is it. Carb or injection? If it is injected it may be the idle air bypass valve. If you can locate it sometime tapping on it will open it. However it will still need to be replaced.

Sometimes you can clean the IAC with throttle body cleaner, then use a light lubrication on it.
