Ford Escort overheating

My daughter has a 95 Escort with over 100,000 miles on it. It has been running fine, but last night she went int a store with the engine running and when she came out the car was overheating. I started the car this morning and noticed the tempature was about half way up the gauge after idling only about five minutes, The fan never came on. The fluid level is full and the fan breaker is ok. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

I would start with a new thermostat. If that one is stuck closed, it will overheat pretty fast.
