Engine won't start

: Here's the deal. I was driving, saw a deer slammed on my brakes drove a little bit. Started to hear a rattle when I had high RPMs. I get down the road. Go through a stop light and my engine dies.

I lift the hood, and I see that my drive belt has been shreded. I also noticed that my water pump pulley was bent. So i'm assuming that is why I heard the rattle and car died.

This is what I have done.

removed the shreded belt. Still won't start.

Got the battery tested. Passed at Autozone

Tested for pressure. And it gets it.

it gets Gasoline,

I have Replaced the spark plugs, still nothing

When I start the engine all you hear is the things rolling. Doesn't seem to get that combustion.

The engine seems not to be turning over fast enough. We also tried to pop the clutch to get it started and nothing. Sometimes when we start it. It kinda back fires. Not like a big one because it doesn't start. But it doesn't back fire everytime. Usually just the first time I try after it has sat for a bit.

Here's what i'm wondering. Will my car start without the belt? Or do I need it on for it to start? I know the belt handles the water pump alternator. But shouldn't it start? Also, people have told me it could be something with the spark. Starter. Or crank postion sensor? What do you think?

I have a 99 Ford Escort ZX2 Double Overhead 2.0l engine. I just replaced it TWO weeks ago. This engine has 23K miles on it. It is standard transmission. Please HELP!

What are you calling a "drive belt" Are we talking about the timing belt? If so, and you have not had it replaced, stop there, take it someone else for the repair.

It's not the timing belt. Timing is on time still and the belt is brand new. There are no damages to the Timing belt.

The belt i'm refering to is serpintine belt.

I have two mechanics working with me to get this fix. We are just stumped.
