1998 Ford Escort idle speed

Hi chaps could you help me with a little problem my lady has a ford escort and when the engine is cold the idle spee is around the 3000rpm and as it gets warmer it slowly comes down to a normal 900rpm but this problem is intermitent but as the weather has changed it is more often than before. Thanks. Mark

The engine is supposed to idle high when started cold that way the engine warms up to the proper range faster to get you the best performance, when its warm then it comes back down.
