1995 Ford Escort car wont start

My son has an n reg ford escort. He went to fill up with petrol and had trouble with his key in the petrol cap. He managed to get the key out, but had to break the petrol cap to fill up with petrol. The car would not start and had to be toed away. The lights come on but it will not turn over. We have no idea what hes done to the car, if it is the broken petrol cap or something else

I can not see or make the connection between the two
no start no crank engine turn but will not start
I would check as follow
1. Check and make sure battery charged and terminal clean and tight
2. Check if you have an alarm system that may be causing the issue
3. Check starter relay on fender side by the battery
4. Check starter
5. If with automatic tranny check Neutral safety switch
6. If standard check clutch switch on the clutch paddle
7. If all check ok give wiring a good look and ignition switch too

I have had a very silmilar problem with my ford escort but have no idea who or where to take it as no one seems to be able to help me with it! Any advice? I ask that as I do not have a very good understanding of what you have said above. :Os
