1995 Ford Escort Cannot start engine

Following a battery change I have not been able to get the engine to start.
Warning lights come on OK, but the redlight also comes on for the alarm, and the starter is dead.
Can the alarm be reset and if so how Please

Try putting the key in the door lock and unlocking it. This may dissable the security.
