My car idles very rough and will eventually stall. When I am driving it runs fine it is only when I am at a stop that the engine seems to be gasping for air. If I step on the brake and keep the rpms over 1000 it seems ok. I change the air filter (there was oil in it) and the fuel filter but the problem is still occuring. Any Ideas?

I have seen other Escorts with oil on the air filter. It seem that Escorts have a problem with the hose going from the crankcase to the intake manifold. The end of the hose that goes into the intake manifold will get plugged and the hose will deteriorate. The intake manifold will also get plugged up where the hose goes into the manifold. The lack of vacuum will create pressure in the crankcase and force oil to go thought the hose going from the valvecover to the air filter box. Replace the hose coming out of the intake manifold. Clean out the hole going into the intake manifold and clean out the intake manifold. Replace the small foam filter in the air cleaner box. Hopefully this will solve the problem of the oil on the air filter. Good luck.
