Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Ford Escort 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

I got the timing belt on (replaced) without getting the crankshaft bolt that holds on the guard and sprocket off. My question is what is the easiest way to time the engine? I can see the timing lines on the top two sprockets but not the crankshaft sprocket, I have tried running the sprocket around in a trial and error method and still no luck. Please help. Thanks

I can't find a 6 cyl escort ??? they are all 4 cyl models ?? ... firing order is 1 3 4 2 .. if you get number one piston to TDC .. top dead centre .. take out #1 spark plug turn crankshaft with a thin long screwdriver in #1 plug hole .. when you see it reach the top and start to go down again that is TDC @ #1... make sure you bring the piston back to the top if it started to go down ...you should feel/see a rocking point between up and down .. mark the crank pulley in some way so you don't lose TDC again.. that is the timing mark for crank pulley #1 @ TDC you can now time the 2 top marks to there marker points on head with your mark for TDC on crank .. make sure that #1 piston is at the top rocking point between up/down motion or you timing will be out .. it would be much easier if you could se original crank mark ???

Yeah in know there not any 6cyl models, I had it on 4 but must have bumped it to 6. Thanks for your reply that helps me a little bit. I noticed on the diagram that with the bottom pulley on that it shows a timing mark, is this true, if so could I just put the pulley back on and time it that way? Also, to find the tdc on #1, is it looking at engine, 1, 3, 4, 2 from left to right or is right to left? I could not get the crank bolt out that is why I am having so much difficulty trying to get it timed, any suggestions on a way to get bolt out, tried socket wrench, gonna try impact tomorrow, I have tried heat also. Also, the timing lines on the top two pulleys, the diagram you sent show them pointed up, a diagram I seen, for this car showed them pointed at each other making like a cross symbol with all three. Any insight will help. Thanks again

No problem about the 6/4 cylinders issue I was just checking. Yes you could just put the pulley back on that would be a lot easier. #1 cylinder is closest to the belt. #2 cylinder #3 cylinder #4 cylinder.1342 is the firng order for spark. Impact is your best bet for getting bolt out. The pic I sent may not be a pic of your engine.I will need the exact engine size to see if I can get a pic for you.
