My car listed above Ecoboost 2.5L. At the end of January on a -50F day, I started the car and when I came back out it wouldn’t start back up, not turning over and just making a whirring noise. I took it to the mechanic and got the timing belt, vacuum pump, and camshaft bolts replaced. Two weeks after I got it back, as I was coming back from a 140 mile round trip, the engine light came on. Being five miles from home I didn’t stop. When going down a small hill 25 mph a mile away from home, my brakes went completely stiff and took all my weight to push down, then all my dash lights came on and it will not turn over again, it makes a whirring kind of sound. Could the parts the mechanic fixed not be what was wrong, or just bad parts? What else could be the problem?

Hey STEPHANIE32H,

If you had the check engine light on and then the engine cut out the first step will be to check the fault codes that you have stored.

From this we should be able to give you a bit more information on what you might be dealing with.

Please follow the guide below to check for codes and let us know what you have:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

If the fault was originally fixed by the repair work carried out by the mechanic and it has no failed again it is possible that its an issue with the repair or that the repair did not resolve the issue.

Can you please give the reason the mechanic gave for replacing timing belt etc.

Regards, Joe

I will work on getting the codes checked.

Originally they thought it was the timing belt due to the noises etc, it was making but when they got to it, it was fine so I just had it replaced. The vacuum pump was replaced because they said the cold weather that day caused the pump to freeze and break.

Hey stephanie32h,

Yes please get the codes read and let us know what you have.
The check engine light coming on means there will be codes stored.

It sounds a bit suspect that the vacuum pump would break but that is extremely cold.

Hopefully the codes will highlight an issue.

It sounds like they didn't actually find anything the first time.

Interesting they got it back running and they didn't tell you what they did to get it going or what the source of the noise and lack of cranking was.

Best of luck getting the codes read.

Regards, Joe
