2001 Ford Escape starter not disengaging

Is there a way to tell if it's the starter or an electrical problem by looking at it and not taking the starter out

2001 Ford Escape starter not disengaging -Do you mean its continously cranking engine over when you release the key to run or off position-If so test the starter relay and ignition switch

No it's engaging while the key is in the on postion, I will start when I turn key to on postion I dont have to turn to crank and it shuts off when I take the key out
