Auto failed to start until cooling down for about an hour. After driving for about 45 minutes the vehicle appeared to jump out of the overdrive gear; ie, acted like it was in neutral. I put auto in D2 and it ran fine. I later drove car in normal drive overdrive and it ran fine. Both instances occurred on the same day. Mechanic advises fuel pump is bad. My question : Can a bad fuel pump affect the shifting of the transmission or are there two separate problems.

A bad fuel pump won't affect the shifting of your tranny, and neither will your tranny cause your car to fail to start.

You could possibly have a bad crank or cam sensor that's causing your computer to get mixed up, and it will affect both.

I can't say for sure, but you should start your search there.
