Electric Fan cutting off early.

My 98 Ford Contour w/140,000+ mi, 4cyl, auto trans, has been running very hot for quite some time. I took it to my mech and he said there were no leaks etc and that the computer said it wasn't as hot as the guage reads. So, I took it to my Ford dealer (where I bought it) and he pretty much said the same thing. Although he said that the switch ($12.00) for the gauge needed to be changed.

I changed both the sensor and the switch and it's still running very hot. So, now I'm baffled? On occassion, the air conditioner blows hot air so I had the AC checked out. All is ok with the AC but, he told me that the fan cuts out way to early which knocks the pressure down and leads to the AC blowing hot air.

My question is this. What would make the fan cut out early like that? He said and I agree that the fan should not cut out like that.

I would greatly appreciate any help?

I'd take it back to the dealer and ask him to check the high speed cooling relay, low speed cooling relay, cooling fan resistor and dual pressure switch. These are all things he should have been checking anyway. Here's a wiring schematic. Take it with you and show it to him.

Hello again.

I spoke again with my AC mech and he thinks we are not on the same page. He thinks the info you gave me is about the heater fan inside the car. If that is the case then we are on the wrong page.

The elec fan I speak of is the one in the engine compartment. It is located near the radiator. The one that starts on it's own when needed. It starts ok and it cuts off to early.

If that is the one you are speaking of then we are ok. Please let me know when you have a chance.

Thanks again!
