2000 Ford Contour starter?

2000 Ford Contour 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 105k miles

Car wont start, cranks very slow and seems to draw a lot of amps while cranking. Positive battery cable gets very hot at terminal and has even started to melt.
I am wondering if it could be a starter issue?

Suspect faulty alternator. Need to have charging system inspected. Voltage regulator in alternator may be faulty causing these issue.
