1979 "Dead" Bronco

I have a '79 Bronco that died this spring after I tried to start it while it was in gear (manual tranny-not driven for a few months-I forgot!). If I mess around with the key, I can get a brake light, and if I mess even longer may get the auxillaries to work, but it's very rare. It won't ever roll over. I think it's the ignition switch. Any thoughts? Also, how do I get it out to do some testing!
Thanks, anybody.

It's not a battery issue, and everything was working normally before it happened. I didn't notice any differences to turn the key in cold weather, although it was sub-zero the day this happened!
