I'm on my second Aerostar and on both the whole coolant system has gotten eventually replaced from the radiator to both heater cores, water pump, freeze plugs, etc. Seems these have a history of the coolant system components going south. I had the same problem where it turned out to be the either front or rear heater cores. OR a very small leak in the system that the smell was coming in the fresh air vent.

One case, the intake gasket had a very small leak. Typically after running the vehicle good and warmed up, I'd shut it off and listen for any escaping steam or such.
