Engine stalls clouds of smoke

Engine (1.9 TDI 150 bhp) stalled after cold start and traveling 500 yards. Managed to restart after three attempts would just idle roughly clouds of grey/black smoke from everywhere would not rev. Tried a couple of times then shut down again next time started had engine rev smoke gradually cleared drove off good power/acceleration and got home still a little smoke, but computer readout showing very high fuel consumption.

Hello,

This sounds like the injector pump in going out causing low fuel pressure at the injectors. But we should run the codes to see what's going on. Here is a guide to help us get started. the ALDL connector might be different for your car because it is EURO.
