Consuming a lot of oil. Engine management light comes on flashing until you pull away then goes out. Changed plugs and coils and PCV valve. White smoke when idling. Not condensation. Changed oil to 5w40.

Hello,

Although we don't have any reference material to pass on to you, this sounds very much like a blown head gasket to me. White smoke coming out of the exhaust indicates that coolant is being burnt in your vehicles combustion chambers. Consuming oil also sounds like it is being burnt in the combustion chambers. Check the oil in the pan with your engine oil dipstick. If it looks like coffee with creamer in it that means the coolant is mixing with the oil. Here are a few links below for you to go to below:

Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you are able to find out.

Hi there. Thank you for commenting. The car does not use any coolant what so ever. Had car scanned and it comes up engine misfire cylinder 2 and 4. Changed coils and plugs about and it is still the same. Also replaced PCV valve. The car can tick over on idle fine. Then out of the blue the engine management light will flash. When you pull away it goes out.

Hello again,

There are two type of Direct Trouble Codes (DTC) that set and illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp(MIL) or "check engine" or "engine management" light. They are defined as a type A and type B DTC. Type B DTC's are the garden variety DTC's that happen all of the time and not vitally important to the longevity of your vehicle. When the MIL flashes, this is a different type of animal altogether, it is a type A DTC and is defined as a catalyst damaging event, i.E. If it is not dealt with immediately serious internal damage may happen to your vehicles engine and serious damage will occur to your vehicle's catalytic converters. A blown head gasket will cause the MIL to flash. Personally, I had a MIL flashing in my supercharged Mustang GT when I lost fuel pressure under boost and went lean and blow a hole throw my number 4 piston. So as you can see, a flashing MIL is pretty serious to the health of your vehicle and needs to dealt with immediately. Can you please pull the DTC for us and let us know what it is.

Thanks,
Alex
