Hello,

The check engine light comes on when the on-board diagnostics detect any fault within the engine management system. It could be any given sensors or parts; it can also be due to emission issues.
The engine light should not impact remote functionality. Have you changed the battery of the remote?

The first step would be to scan the vehicle and retrieve the trouble code(s). This will help with the diagnostics. If you do not have a scanner, you can take the vehicle to your local auto parts store, and they can scan and retrieve the codes for you.

Let me know what code(s) that it shows.
Thank you.
