Engine light comes on when stationary

I purchased a corsa second hand, it is making a noise coming from the alternator. When I was driving home the engine light came on. However now it only comes on when I'm stationary. Please help?

This can be the alternator, check the charging system, at higher RPM you have a greater voltage output from the charging system, at low idle the alternator works harder, (by grounding the field).
