Engine coolant overheated

Our car listed above overheated today. The engine coolant overheated light came on, temperature gauge went to H. The vehicle stopped pulling. Tried to let the vehicle cool really well in order to restart to get it home. Vehicle will not pull no matter how much gas you give it. The engine coolant overheated light has stayed on. Suggestions on what it could be? We thought thermostat but can’t understand why it won’t pull at all.

Just to be clear, the engine starts and runs but just will not move?

If the engine overheated and no matter how long the engine cools down but still shows it is hot then I suspect we either have a sensor issue or the vehicle is in protection mode.

So let's start with checking for codes and going from there. Here is a guide that will help with this:
