Why does it take so long for heater to get hot? Is there another alternative to remedy this problem?

If you are in a very cold location it will take a while for all of the cold components to heat up and you get good heat inside the vehicle. You could get a low priced scan tool that can show live data and watch the coolant temperature. Also, check that you are not trying to get heat "faster" by turning the blower fan way up or on defrost immediately. Both of those will pull in cold outside air faster than the barely warm heater core can handle.

What I do is start the engine, let it run a few minutes with the heat off. Now turn the heat on with the blower on a low setting and set the system to recirculate the air if possible. This keeps running the air inside the car through the heater core instead of bringing in outside air. Let it run this way for five yo ten minutes. The new Journey we have seems to take forever to heat up if it is down in the low teens or below zero. My old Jeep heats up quick though.
