I am trying to setup timing. I have all information but suspect someone changed engine. There are three different references for the 258. Hence I need help identifying 106 A 24 this is on the block between cylinder 3-5 on passenger side. I know it is 24th day and a 258 but what year? Also have a serial number below the year date stamp it is # 970 490.
Thanks

Well buddy, you cannot go wrong with that year!

I have got the same one in "Mr. Jeep", the one barrel is long gone, he now has a Holley 390.

Screenshot you a table below.

I have the information for years beginning to the 1978 on, the distributor setup is wrong.
My question is 1977 motor in my 1978, but the information for for distributor setup for 1977 is different than 1978. So which do I use?

I bought Jeep last year, towed it to show did not get on it till last week, replace fuel tank lines, radiator etc.
Got it started ran badly. Noticed distributor for timing, pulled my Hane's Manuel notice my dist location was different than any three. 1971-1974, 1975-1977, and 1978 on.
Mine is closest to the 1978 on but he must have had it a whole tooth off.
Hence I decided to Id the block cause I really did not trust the dude. So I guess I am going to go with the 1978 model and bring it back a tooth, number compression stroke is on or a little pass number five now.

MARK FRIZZELL,

I am here to help you out all I can!

We are going to have to attempt to do this thing like the 2carBigGuys want all of this structured out.

This may seem like a pain (but it really is not) Something to do with "searches" in the site. Your question was about engine identification. It hopefully has been satisfied.

I kind of do not mind continuing on as we used to in the past (I have been here a while, click on my avatar)

But,

They would really prefer that a whole new thread be started with the new subject at hand. I am guessing the two subjects would then not be confused in the cyber world.

Please do this:

Submit a new question here: https://www.2carpros.com/questions/new
In the early parts of submitting it, somehow ask for "CJ MEDEVAC" or "The Medic" (both are me on here). I can assist you with your dilemma, I have recommendations, I have had nothing but six CJ-5's (and one Willy's) since 1981 when I was allowed on the asphalt. When you find perfection, you stick with it!

Thanks,

The Medic
