Accelerating from a stop there is thick smoke coming from the exhaust

Yesterday when I was driving home from work, as I would accelerate from a stop, my car would release thick smoke from the exhaust. The exhaust would pretty much engulf the cars behind me.

Need to know the color of the smoke; blue, black, or white. If it is white, suspect engine coolant is burning in the engine due to a leaking cylinder head gasket. The clue is the level will be going down in the reservoir.
