No mode control. Cannot change air flow direction to the defrost position. All other functions and controls seem to work. Hearing a constant repetitive squeak coming from under the dash on the drivers side. Suspect the main drive gear in the mode door actuator has broken loose and continues to receive a drive signal to find it's home position but it can't, so it is told to continue rotating until it finds a good reference point during the self calibration. I need to know the easiest and least damaging way to remove and replace the mode door actuator. Any guidance or information would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

That is about the worst one to change. It has a cam and gear system that likes to fall out of place when the actuator is removed. The OE method is to remove the complete dash assembly to get to the actuator. There is also a shortcut method that you just move things out of the way and go up through the drivers side footwell, removing the temp actuator then the mode assembly. GM used to sell the actuator as an assembled module. That included the actuator the cams and the bracket, those made the process easier. For the shortcut you can remove the assembly and deal with it out of the dash. That way you can time the cams and install the replacement actuator. Once it's back in you use a scan tool to recalibrate them. You can also do it by removing the fuse that powers the instrument panel I generally use a scan tool but you can pull the CSTR fuse and the HVAC fuse in the fuse block behind the glove box. Keep them out at least a full minute. Any less and the memory won't clear. Plug them back in and turn the ignition on. You should hear them reset and then have control again.
