how difficult is this task to be done at home and how do I do it correctly

Hi:
It's not a hard job. Follow the upper rad hose toward the engine and it will end at the thermostat housing. Drain the rad, remove the upper hose, remove the housing, replace the t-stat and reverse the sequence to finish.
