Check for a faulty o2 sensor, could be saying the air is lean causing too much fuel to get in the convertor and superheat it, an exhaust leak could lean things out also causing more fuel to be put in.

Do you have a dead cylinder?

Possible leaky injectors and too much fuel pressure is another cause.

Does convertor get red hot idling or driving?
