The key start circuit is a wire that runs throught the switch and starter relay. It finds a completed ground through your nuetral switch. You may have seen fusible link burn, and that is just like a fuse. Only it will smoke sometimes. First you must find the short, it may be where you were working, that is the most likely spot. The ignition switch may also be bad. Even the starter relay or brown starter solenoid wire or starter solenoid could be bad. If you have a test light you can test the fuse link wires. They are near the battery. You can buy an in-line plastic fuse so if you have this problem again, only the plastic fuse will burn and you won't have to re-wire another fuse link in. Test each fuse link using a test light at each one, check for voltage on each side, and the burned one will be found easily. These parts are explained in the test fuses section and a test light can be purchased at the store. An auto store sells in-line fuses that can be wired in, and fusible link wire also. I hope this sheds some light on this for you.
